Revenue Protection

We’re a close-knit team that thrives on collaboration, working hand-in-hand with various departments, including BTP, security staff, and other key players. Our mission? To safeguard Merseyrail’s revenue while making sure every journey is as smooth as possible.

As ticket guardians, we check tickets on trains and at stations, issue penalty fares, and tackle fraudulent travel—all while ensuring top-notch customer service. We're not just about rules; we bring a friendly face to every interaction!

When service disruptions arise or significant events take place, we’re the first to jump in and support our passengers, helping them navigate any hiccups along the way. Plus, we keep a watchful eye for any anti-social behaviour, ensuring a pleasant experience for everyone on board!

“I have dedicated a decade of my career to Merseyrail, in the realm of revenue protection. Starting as an RPO and progressing to the position of area manager, I thrive in the complexity and challenges inherent in this role. It's not just about tickets; it's about fostering exceptional customer care and collaborating with all network departments to ensure a truly positive passenger experience for all.”

Meet John, Lead Revenue Protection Officer

“My Career on the Railway has spanned 34 years, 2 years working on the barriers around the Merseyrail Loop and 32 years within the Revenue Protection department,  during this time I have seen many changes, but the department has now come on leaps and bounds to perform better than it ever has in the past. To carry out this type of role you are reliant on your colleagues to watch out for one another to ensure you safe and this is done to a very high standard.

The team members from the Area Manager, Leads and RPO’s have an excellent working relationship and I am proud to be part of this great team.”

Meet Matthew, Revenue Protection Officer

"I began my career with Merseyrail as a station assistant GPR, which meant travelling to 6 different stations as and when they needed cover.

18 months into this role I applied for the Revenue Protection Officer role, and was successful in my application! Immediately once joining the RPO team, I felt the strong team connection that we all share and the support from leads and management. I know this may sound cliche but I love my job and enjoy what we do, and I have the ability to makes plans with my family. This role has given me more than I could have asked for."
