Development of Our Network

The original formation of the Mersey Railway dates to 1886 and was the world's second underground passenger railway. Merseyrail was established in 1977 after electrification and regional expansion.
The original service on the Merseyrail lines was provided by Class 502 and 503 trains, and in 1978 the Class 507 and Class 508 trains were introduced as a new fleet.
Over the years key new stations, like Liverpool South Parkway (2006) and Maghull North (2018), have been built, alongside enhanced ticketing systems (2009) and ongoing refurbishments throughout the network.
In 2023, advanced Class 777 trains, with sliding step technology and some using onboard batteries to enable use on unpowered track, were launched.
With commitment to continued modernisation in mind, future network development includes a new station in the Baltic Triangle, expansion across the Northwest and into Wales, and a tap-and-go ticketing system.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

We recognise the importance of not only being representative of the communities that we serve, but also ensuring that our staff feel they are able to bring their #bestselftowork.

We believe that all staff: have the right to equality of opportunity; should be treated with respect; recognise the value of and embrace difference; should be supported to achieve their full potential as well as foster an inclusive and collaborative working environment.

Recognition & Reward

We believe that our employees are crucial in the on-going success of the business, and employees who perform exceptionally, and exceed the business values and behaviours, deserve recognition and reward.

Our Key Areas

This is… Rail House

Located next door to Lime Street station, Rail House, located on Lord Nelson Street, is just a few minutes from the centre of Liverpool. Here you will find our Safety, Finance, Procurement, HR, Marketing, IT, Asset Management, Customer Services and Operations teams - all of which support our frontline colleagues in helping Merseyrail keep on track every day.

We also house our occupational health provider and onsite physio who help our employees with any medical requirements.

Also within the building are fellow train operators TPE and Avanti, backed up by the presence of the British Transport Police to keep us all safe!

These are… our stations

The network consists of 69 stations across two main lines: the Northern Line and the Wirral Line.

The Northern Line runs predominantly north-south, connecting suburbs with central Liverpool. To connect to the Wirral Line, the trains pass under the Mersey via tunnels and has three main branches.

There are plans in motion for future expansion and improvements, including extending services to new areas across the North West and into Wales, increasing train frequency, and upgrading existing stations for more developed accessibility and passenger comfort.

These are… our trains

The Merseyrail Class 777 trains represent a significant upgrade for the Liverpool City Region’s rail network. Manufactured by Stadler Rail, the 53 strong fleet consist of state-of-the-art electric and battery powered units.

Key features include step-free access with intelligent sliding steps, enhancing accessibility for passengers with wheelchairs or prams. The trains are publicly owned, reflecting a £500 million investment in modernising the network. With a focus on passenger comfort and efficiency, the Class 777 trains are set to transform travel across Merseyside, offering a more reliable and inclusive service.

Our depots are based in Birkenhead, Kirkdale, and Southport.
