Train Managers

As a Train Manager at Merseyrail, you'll be the guardian of safety and security for our customers –
all while delivering 5-star service. You'll handle everything from addressing customer inquiries and complaints,
to managing any accidents or emergencies that might arise.

Keeping passengers in the loop about delays is key, and you'll also share exciting insights about local tourist attractions to enhance their travel experience. Your role calls for top-notch communication skills, a calm demeanour under pressure, and a solid understanding of the rail network and its surroundings.

Our Train Managers are the key to ensuring a safe, efficient, and enjoyable journey for every passenger on board!

Meet Neil, Senior Train Manager

“I started with Merseyrail in 2020 as a Station Duty Manager and moved into Operations as a Senior Train Manager in late 2022.

My role as a Senior Train Manager is very varied. On some days I will be on-call to support with any issues that Train Managers face in their day-to-day role and on other days I may be out and about on Trains with Train Managers assessing them for competence or even just a catch up!

It can be quite challenging at times; we deal with a multitude of issues that can happen with no notice and you are required to think on your feet and use your own initiative to reach the best possible outcome.

I also support at major events to ensure our passengers are kept safe on busy platforms while waiting for their Train.

The most enjoyable part of my role is supporting our people in their roles to deliver a safe, reliable and punctual customer experience. Merseyrail has an excellent track record (No pun intended!) of career progression opportunities for those who are keen to develop themselves.”

Meet Dave, Senior Train Manager

I joined Merseyrail 20 years ago, as a Train Guard, straight from a full career in the military. Merseyrail helped my transition from the forces with its structured organisation and very established timetables, and I thrived in this environment.

I worked as a Guard for 6 years and then, by selection, moved onto a more senior position as a Guards Manager - which is pretty much where I am now!

Recently, with the introduction of the new trains on the Network, there was a change of title rather than change of role. My new title is now Senior Train Manager, and the Guards are now Train Managers.

The new fleet has brought its adjustments for both staff and public, but this has been seen as a short term pain for long term gain. It has been part of this job is to adapt, overcome and implement the changes as they occur and support the train crew during the changeover.
Another change which has come with the introduction of the new fleet, involves an imminent managerial reorg whereby the job role of Senior Train Manager is being developed, and therefore another exciting chapter of Merseyrail management is about to unfold!
